The Program of this Academy features:

This program begins online the week of June 30 with the AFS Global Up Abroad program – a research-backed, award-winning curriculum combining learning at your own pace and facilitated group dialogue sessions that will guide your learning and reflection throughout this program empowering you  with essential skills to live, work, and make a positive social impact in diverse settings. Upon completion of this program, you will earn the AFS Global Competence Certificate.

Participants will then spend two dynamic, interactive weeks in New York City learning through lectures, workshops, simulations, and site visits. Throughout this time, you will have access to UN institutions and staff in order to build your networks and gain insights into future career possibilities, and at the conclusion, will receive a UNITAR certificate of completion.

Multilateral conference

By joining this program you will experience:

  • Lectures and workshops on topics such as leadership, cross-cultural communication, peace-keeping, human rights, & the SDGs;
  • Interactive simulations in areas such as consensus building, negotiations, & the UN;
  • Specific career development support including finding your purpose, public speaking, CV building, interview skills, & UN internship and staff opportunities;
  • A two-week field visit to New York City with site visits, cultural activities, & free time to explore the city;
  • Participation in the AFS Youth Assembly;
  • Develop “power” skills such as honing your global leadership skills, developing emotional intelligence, and more while earning the AFS Global Competence Certificate;
  • and receive a certificate of completion delivered by UNITAR.

Who can participate in this Academy?

The United Nations Global Citizenship Training Academy is open to young people with a deep interest in the United Nations and the desire to be an international citizen.

Participants can come from the public or private sector, NGOs, think tanks and academia. University students and participants from an entirely different background are equally welcome to apply. All should have a proven track record of leadership experience, school, or community involvement.

Applicants should be between the ages of ages 18-35 and be proficient in written and spoken English (Intermediate Level).

In order to ensure the highest quality standards, this opportunity will be open to a maximum of 30 participants.
